The islands are an ideal area for sailing nearly all year around. Weather reporting and forecasts are very good, and so one can easily create an own itinerary. The northern Mistral-winds can be very strong, and so a skipper shall be carefull with such an information coming in!

Itineraries for teh Baleares

Sailing from Mallorca to Ibiza makes a liferaft obligatory, but most boats have that anyway. If you want to sail to the spanish mainland, make sure, the insurance is covering all riscs for that area as well!

Harbours and bays:

Mallorca has a good net of Marinas and ports, except on the northern coast. Menorca has 4 ports for pleasure boats, but none of it on the southern coast, where one can find the best anchorages and bays. The most beautiful bays, called"calas", can be discovered on the southern coast of Mallorca. In the high season, the bays can be crowded, so make sure, yoou are there early enough or ready for another hour or two sailing to another bay. As everywhere, it is recommended to make absolutely sure, the anchor will not slip.

Wind, weather and forcasts for Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca:

Die The balearic islands are under the influence of the high pressure systems coming from atlantic "Azores".  This guarantees nice weather mostly, and in summer thermical wind systems with pretty nice sailing conditions.

Strong winds are sometimes expected from NW, N or NE, the already mentioned Mistral. The daily weather bulletin is published from the harbour master of each port or Marina. These are spanish only, but it is easy to find someone for a translation! Note: the forecasts are given for very specific areas and they are not very exact. Better informations can be seen on TV weather reportīs satellite-pictures at 9 p.m. in many Bars or Bodegas. VHF-weather report: Deutsche Welle 6075 und 9545 kHz, Mon - Sat 15:55 Uhr UTC, Sun 17:55 Uhr. Of course weather can be optained from the internet - Internet-Cafes are everywhere.

Water, fuel and provisioning for sailing-boats:

Is available in nearly all ports, fuel sometimes needs a short walk to a gasstation nearby.

Navigation:

Usually, navigation can be terrestical, even if you sail to Menorca, land is always in sight. But making sure the GPS and Plotter is working and one knwos, how (...!)  and a continuous navigational reporting is surely a good decision!
